मान्यता है कि गंगेश्वर के दर्शन से सभी तीर्थो की यात्रा का फल प्राप्त होता है ओर मनुष्य अंतकाल में परमगति को प्राप्त करता है।
आकाश मार्ग से गंगा जब पृथ्वी पर प्रकट हुई तो भगवान शंकर ने उसे अपनी जटा में धारण किया। शिवजी ने जटा में धारण करने के बाद उसे धरती पर नही आने दिया, इससे गंगा क्रोधित हो गई ओर शिवजी के शरीर को शीतल कर दिया। शिवजी ने भी क्रोध में गंगा को जटा में बांध लिया। कई कल्प वर्षो तक गंगा ने जटा में ही तपस्या की। भागीरथ की उपासना से गंगा का धरती पर अवतरण हुआ और समुद्र की पत्नी हुई। एक बार सभी देवी-देवता ब्रम्ह लोक में ब्रम्हा की स्तुति करने के लिए वहां पहुंचे वहां गंगा ओर समुद्र भी गये। वायु के वेग से गंगा का आंचल उड़ गया, इसे देख सभी देवताओं ने अपने मुख नीचे कर लिये परंतु महाभिष नामक राजऋषि गंगा को देखते रहे। यह देखते हुए ब्रम्हा जी ने उसे पृथ्वी लोक पर भेज दिया । यह देखकर समुद्र ने भी
गंगा को मृत्यु लोक मे रहने का श्राप दिया। श्राप के कारण विलाप करती गंगा ने ब्रम्हा से विनय किया। ब्रम्हा ने कहा कि गंगा तुम महाकाल वन में शिप्रा के दक्षिण में स्थित शिवलिंग का दर्शन ओर पूजन करो। गंगा महाकाल वन आई ओर गंगेश्वर महादेव के अपनी सखी शिप्रा के साथ दर्शन कर पूजन किया। गंगेश्वर के दर्शन से गंगा श्राप मुक्त हुई उसी समय समुद्र भी वहां उपस्थित हुए ओर गंगा का सम्मान किया। मान्यता है कि गंगेश्वर के दर्शन से सभी तीर्थो की यात्रा का फल प्राप्त होता है ओर मनुष्य अंतकाल में परमगति को प्राप्त करता है।
शिव का पंचाक्षरी मंत्र है – ‘नमः शिवाय’ । यजुर्वेद के रुद्राध्याय में ११ अनुवाक में से एक अनुवाक (एक वर्ग) में ‘नमः 
शिवाय’ शब्द हैं, जहां से यह मंत्र लिया गया है । इसी के प्रारंभ में प्रणव जोडने पर ‘ॐ नमः शिवाय’ का षडक्षरी मंत्र बनता है ।
Gangeshwar Temple
This temple has five Shiva lingams. There are steps leading down to the sea level. Seawater came up till the shiv lingams and the view of the sea shore is very panoramic. Parking is free. Seller for belpatra & Naariyal is also available at the entrance. Some snack and ice cream vendors are also available. A good place for sight…

It’s not often that one can see a temple located practically on a sea beach front with five of its deities ( lingams) actually caressing the blue waters. Well this is the famous n much revered Gangeshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva where devotees come from afar to seek salvation in an atmosphere of tranquillity as they fold their hands…

Beautiful place. Sacred place with divine peace. Best experience sea waves worship Lord shiva… And it’s told to be that 5 shivalings was given to these place during Agyatvas of Pandavas.
Its very ancient place where sea waves touch lingam of lord shiva. Five Shivalingas that were supposedly established by the Pandavas during their exile period.
The temple as such is not much of a temple. Its a small place between the rocks just next to the sea. There are three Shiva Linga which people can go to. I did see a person doing complete pooja there, not a typical brahmin but a regular guy. There is a barricaded are to stand there because the sea…
The Gangeshwar temple is towards the outer edges of Diu, 2.5 kilometers away from the INS Khukri memorial. The best thing about this temple is although it is a popular spot, it does not have the maddening rush of devotees that make visiting any temple very difficult. I reached at around late afternoon. A few people had gathered, mostly tourists….
Very nice place to visit.Temple is small of 1+4= 5 Shiva Lingas. Beach is small and very beautiful. Must see place in Diu as per my personal opinion. Parking places are also good compare to other places.
